Dentistry SIG Scholarship: Supporting Research for the Provision of Oral Healthcare for those Suffering Long-term Hardship

In recent years, the Dentistry Alumni Special Interest Group has been in ‘caretaker mode.’ Recently, we decided to explore options for the future. If the Dentistry SIG is to continue to accumulate funds, but not to be actively involved in organising events, we felt it was time to explore ‘what next?’ Under our watch, and thanks to the continued support of our members, funds held in Trust have now exceeded $70,000.  After extensive discussions with the Head of School, we have agreed to see if we can increase the current funds to over $100,000, in order to establish an endowment fund to support Research for the Provision of Oral Health Care for those Suffering Long-term Hardship.

All additional donations are welcome (from all members and supporters—not just those who are members of the SIG). Donations to support Alumni Friends’ projects – including the special Dentistry Appeal – can be made as a direct deposit to:

Alumni Friends of the University of Queensland Inc.
 Bank Account No: 1012 4990  BSB: 064 158

Please send the office a note of your donation (and the fund to which it is to be directed) so that we can issue a tax-deductible receipt. Donations can also be made by MasterCard/Visa, via the office (email alumni@alumnifriendsuq.com or call 07 3365 1562). Thank you!

The Dentistry Alumni Special Interest Group was established in 1989 to foster mutually beneficial relations and a spirit of unity among dentistry students, graduates and the School of Dentistry at The University of Queensland.  The group has been an active supporter of, and donor to, the UQ School of Dentistry. The Association is responsible for the management of the David Dunlop Memorial Dental Bursary, and members have raised funds to purchase major items of equipment (in total, over $250,000—including a $50,000 grant towards the purchase of Cone Beam Dental Imaging Equipment). Our Dentistry SIG has a wonderful story of connection and celebration that all members should be very proud of—a story that will continue with the creation of this special research fund to support UQ Dentistry. We thank everyone who is able to support us in achieving our $100,000 target—“only” less than $30,000 to go. . .

Best wishes,

Chris Muir, John O’Hare, and Marcus Tod (Alumni Friends, Dentistry Caretaker Committee)
