YOU can support the Book fair in four ways:

The Book Fair has two key aims:

  • to raise money for donation to University projects (through the UQ Alumni Trust), and
  • to attract alumni and members of the general public to the University’s St Lucia campus.

On average, approximately one hundred and fifty thousand books are prepared for sale for each Book Fair. Preparation consists of sorting, classifying, pricing and packing books, not all of which can be accepted for sale. Books not selected for sale may be passed on to community organisations such as Anglicare and Red Cross. Some books (including out-dated text books) are sent overseas through organisations such as Rotary.

Work in preparation for each Biennial Book Fair commences almost immediately after the preceding UQ Alumni Book Fair® has concluded. This work takes place within an two buildings on the University of Queensland Long Pocket Campus (Kurrajong and Banksia). All of this work is undertaken by the Volunteers: groups of book lovers who meet on a regular basis (usually Tuesday and Wednesday mornings). The vast majority of our volunteers are retired academics, teachers and professionals–alumni of UQ and from other Universities around the world. But not all are graduates. Everyone is welcome. A love of books and the willingness to volunteer are the only requirement to join the team.

On average, volunteers each contribute approximately 200 hours in a non-Book Fair year, increasing to around 275 hours in a ‘Book Fair year.’ Overall it is estimated that between 18,000-20,000 hours are contributed over a two-year period by volunteers in the lead-up to and conduct of a UQ Alumni Book Fair®.
